Betty's Life

Created by Graham 3 years ago
Betty was born on the 2nd of December 1926 at Croft Cottage, Stonethwaite, Borrowdale to John and Edie Hind.

She grew up there with her brothers Will and David and younger sister, Mary.

The family later moved to Oak Cottage in Rosthwaite, where Betty helped run a B and B. It was there that her son, Richard was born on March 29th 1948.

Betty talked about working at the Pencil Factory and Museum at this time and cycling to Keswick to watch films at the Alhambra Cinema.

Betty met Kevin through mutual friends Julia and Alan Braithwaite. They married on October 8th 1955. Although she moved to Manchester after her marriage, Borrowdale and her family there were always in her heart and she would visit them as often as possible..

It was in Manchester that two daughters came along: Sue in February 1959 and Helen in June 1961. A few years later the family moved to Parrenthorn in Prestwich and Betty became a regular at St. George’s Church in Simister.

Betty had various jobs, but the one that meant the most to her was working at Halsteads on Radcliffe New Road, Whitefield. She would often talk about her work colleagues and things that happened during her working day. Betty was very conscientious and highly regarded by all who knew her there. She did not want to retire and when she did her focus, as always, was her family, ever growing with grandchildren and then great grandchildren.

Betty was a very caring person and would do anything she could to help people. Throughout her life she took responsibility for others, for example, looking out for her Auntie Nellie for many years. She was always busy baking, knitting, sewing, reading and doing crosswords.

Unfortunately, in her last few years Betty suffered from Dementia and was able to do less and less or to remember people or things. However, her spirit shone through and we would talk about her past in Borrowdale and reminisce, often using Cumbrian phrases and sayings connected with her dad to make her smile. She also could still remember and sing songs from the past, especially ‘You are my Heart’s Delight’.

Her last year was spent at Whitefield House Residential Home, where she was well looked after and visited regularly by her family. It was there that she died on Tuesday, April 21st 2020.
